Most Americans think the slaying this week of at least 19 Palestinian demonstrators was uncalled for, according to a Newsweek poll released Saturday.

More than half of the 757 people interviewed by telephone Thursday and Friday, about 56 percent, said they thought the use of live ammunition against the rock throwers Monday was an overreaction. At the same time, 46 percent said they were less sympathetic to Israel and 43 percent said they were less sympathetic to the Palestinian position than they were a year ago.
