The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining has received $1.75 million to administer the state's active and abandoned coal mine reclamation programs.

The state now has received more than $9 million in reclamation funds during the last seven years, the division announced.Secretary of the Interior Donald Hodel told division officials that $1.26 million is earmarked for the state's regulatory program, and $491,000 for the abandoned mine land reclamation program.

The secretary said Utah "has the lead role" among the states in enforcement and on-the-ground inspections, as well as reclaiming abandoned mines.

Funds come from the U.S. Department of Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.
