The badly decomposed body of a 73-year-old woman was found in a locked car near Red Fleet Reservoir over the weekend, but Uintah County authorities say foul play is not suspected.
Detective Wayne Hollenbeck said the body found Saturday night was that of an Olympia, Wash., woman and apparently had been locked in the car 10 to 12 weeks. The woman's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.Hollenbeck said passers-by called authorities when they spotted the locked car in a remote desert area about seven miles from Vernal and noticed a handgun on the front seat.
The woman had a bullet wound to the head and was holding the pistol, Hollenbeck said.
He said a note was found in the glove compartment but that the woman had no identification with her. The car's reflectors were covered with tape and the license plates had been removed, Hollenbeck said.
The state medical examiner had not yet ruled on the exact cause of death Sunday, but Hollenbeck said foul play was not suspected.
