Honda Motor Co Ltd. will offer standard driver side and passenger side air bags on all U.S. Honda and Acura cars by the 1994 model year.

Honda previously offered airbags only on select U.S. models, such as the Acura Legend.Air bags are safety devices, usually encased in the steering wheel of a car, that inflate when the car collides with another object.

The devices have been a matter of some controversy, with some consumer groups calling for their mandatory installation in all cars.

Among U.S. manufacturers, Chrysler Corp. is currently the only company to offer standard driver side air bags on all passenger car models. However, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have said they plan to install air bags in a wide range of their vehicles before 1995.
