With first place already in their possession, the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah have a chance to crack the national rankings with a victory over 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge today.
The T-Birds, (4-2, 2-0) and Matadors (4-1, 1-0) meet in a 1 p.m. game at the Coliseum of Southern Utah. It is the T-Birds' Homecoming game."Northridge seems to have some of the better talent in the league speed-wise," said SU Coach Jack Bishop. "Their defense is really the heart and soul of their football team and that is where they really have team speed."
The Matadors' only loss was to Division I-AA Northern Arizona in the home opener. They boast one of the conference's premier tailback's in Albert Fann, who was the 1989 WFC Player of the Year.
SU quarterback Brad Matthews, who has completed 45 percent of his passes for 707 yards, doesn't even lead the team in touchdown passes. Running back Steve Hutchings, a former quaterback, has four touchdown passes to Matthews' three.
