An Ariane rocket carrying two U.S.-made telecommunications satellites blasted off Friday night from this remote launching facility.

The unmanned Ariane 44-L rocket, powered by four strap-on liquid fuel boosters, roared off its northeast South American launch-pad on schedule at 7:58 p.m.The satellites are to be put into geostationary orbit over the Galapagos Islands west of the Ecuadoran coast.
