The government has fired more than two-thirds of Bulgaria's secret police force since the ouster of hard-line leader Todor Zhivkov in November, Interior Minister Pencho Penev said Friday.

Penev, in testimony to Parliament, said a total of 5,139 ministry positions were cut between Nov. 10 and the end of August.A few former security workers were reassigned to regular police duty but most were either retired or released to find work outside the government, he said.
