The Justice Department said Friday that it will file a civil suit against Exxon over the company's Alaska oil spill when its criminal case against Exxon is resolved.

"We are actively preparing for that, but we don't want to state when and where" the civil suit will be filed, Justice Department spokesman Frank Kelly said from Washington. He said the department has a "parallel procedure" policy that calls for holding off on civil litigation until a criminal case against the same defendant is resolved. He said that was why the government had not sued Exxon for damages 1 1/2 years after the spill.
