Riot police on Friday fired tear gas to break up violent protests by about 5,000 university students, who hurled rocks and firebombs, demanding an end to what they called military rule in South Korea.

Earlier in the day, 20 leading dissidents joined opposition leader Kim Dae-jung in a hunger strike to force President Roh Tae-woo to apologize for the government's alleged spying on civilians.Opposition politicians, radicals and dissidents set a major anti-government rally in Seoul on Saturday to increase the pressure on Roh's government.
