Bruce Crampton and Robert Gaona each birdied the final hole Friday to tie Bob Betley at five-under par 67 for the first-round lead at the Gatlin Brothers Southwest Senior Classic.
Al Kelley, Terry Dill and J.C. Goosie finished one shot back on the par-72, 6,843-yard Fairway Oaks Country Club course. Jack Fleck, John Paul Cain, Ben Smith, Don January and Rives McBee were two back at 69.Betley, a former Ogden, Utah, police officer and a Senior Tour rookie, charged into the lead with five straight birdies to close his round. He shot a six-under par 30 on the final nine holes.
"It's a real break to play this early in the morning," said Betley. "The course played great."
The $300,000 tournament continues today and will conclude Sunday. The winner takes $45,000.
