Bishop George Carey, the next archbishop of Canterbury, says he tried to steal chocolate bars from a freight train when he was 8 years old.

The bishop recalls that he was caught by a nightwatchman and what he thought was a box of chocolate Mars bars turned out to be a box of Bibles. He said his captor pulled out a Bible and told him: "Here's one that will do you more good."

"Looking back on 46 years, I am sure it has," says Carey in a new book of childhood memories by 70 personalities, "When They Were Young."
