Gov. Norm Bangerter has declared the year between this Oct. 11 and Oct. 11, 1991, to be the Daughters of the American Revolution Centennial Year in Utah. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating its 100th birthday, "A Century of Service to the Nation, 1890-1990."
Since its founding, DAR has stressed good citizenship and love of country. It has donated over 10 million copies of its "DAR Manual for Citizenship" to the foreign-born who wish to become American citizens. The NSDAR is a service organization that pioneered in the field of preservation and environmental issues, established schools in Appalachia and was the nucleus for the Army Nurse Corps.First ladies who were or are DAR members include Caroline Scott Harrison, Florence Harding, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mamie Eisenhower, Rosalyn Carter, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush. Others include Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton.
In Utah, Mrs. O.J. (Margaret) Salisbury organized the Spirit of Liberty Chapter in 1879. Her great-great grandfather was Ephraim Blain, who was a member of George Washington's staff.
