A Salt Lake man is scheduled for an Aug. 9 pretrial hearing in 3rd District Court in a Pioneer Day stabbing that left another man in critical condition.

Eliud Paul Torres, 38, 243 W. Second South, Apt. 15, pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and attempted criminal homicide charges in a Monday arraignment before 3rd Circuit Judge Sheila McCleave.Prosecutors claim Torres stabbed Nathan Edward East, 48, 726 E. Third South, Apt. 1, in the back during an argument about 7 p.m. He was stabbed with a butcher knife that punctured a lung.

East was in serious condition late Monday at LDS Hospital.

The judge ordered the defendant returned to the Salt Lake County Jail, and set the pretrial hearing before Judge Floyd Gowans.
