The Eagles started off the season on the road with one win and one loss to the newly introduced San Diego Gulls.

The Gulls defeated the Salt Lake Golden Eagles 4-3 Friday night.It marked the first game for the Gulls in the International Hockey League. An impressive crowd of 9,735 watched the first professional hockey game in San Diego since the 1970s.

Larry Floyd scored a hat trick for San Diego with all goals coming in the first period. In fact, amazingly, all seven goals scored Friday night came in the first period.

On Saturday, the Eagles beat San Diego, 4-3.

It was the first professional victory by Salt Lake rookie goalie Warren Sharples, who started Saturday night's game and held San Diego scoreless until the 7:24 mark of the third period.

Sharples had come in a relief effort in Friday night's loss, holding the Gulls scoreless in the final two periods.

With the road victory, Salt Lake evened its record at 1-1 - identical to San Diego.

The two teams meet again 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Golden Eagles' home-opener at the Salt Palace.
