Duchesne County officials have released the name of a 20-year-old Orem man who drowned in the Grandaddy Lake in the High Uintahs Wilderness Area.
The victim was identified as Karl Arnoldson, a Brigham Young University student, Duchesne County Sheriff Clair Poulson said Sunday.Arnoldson and his friend, Douglas Oliver, 25, were fishing from the shore when Arnoldson decided to swim out to an island, Poulson said. The victim swam less than 150 yards before he had trouble in the cold water.
Oliver tried to swim to his aid, the sheriff said, but was forced to turn back when he began suffering cramps about 30 feet out.
Authorities recovered Arnoldson's body Thursday but could not release the name until Sunday because one of Arnoldson's family members was on a rafting trip and unavailable, Poulson said.
