With a completion date about one year away, construction crews are starting work before sunrise these days on the new Jazz Arena. Sahara Construction in Bountiful and Ohbayashi Construction of Japan hope to finish structural concrete work by February, then crews will begin the three-month task of building a roof over the 20,400-seat arena. "We are on schedule in most areas and ahead of schedule in others," said Tom Maybe of Sahara Construction. Groundbreaking was May 22 at the arena site on the block bordered by South Temple, 100 South, 400 West and 300 West. The $66 million facility, projected to hold events 210-220 nights per year, is needed because the Utah Jazz basketball team has outgrown the Acord Arena in the Salt Palace. Jazz owner Larry Miller is financing the arena.
