Typhoon Hattie cut a swath across Japan's main islands Monday, drenching the nation and leaving three dead in a landslide before it was downgraded to a tropical storm shortly before hitting Tokyo.

Hattie, the 21st typhoon of the year and the fifth to hit Japan, struck overnight in the southermost main island of Kyushu with winds of 65 mph before moving up the Japanese coastline across Shikoku Island to the main island of Honshu.Three people died and 14 were injured in northern Shikoku when Hattie's heavy rains triggered a landslide that struck the bus they were riding in, Kyodo News Service reported.
