James D. Van Erden, former associate professor of economics at Weber State College, has been named director of the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training in the U.S. Department of Labor.

Van Erden had been acting bureau director since Oct, 1, 1987. In announcing the appointment, Roberts T. Jones, acting assistant labor secretary for employment and training, said, "The bureau is a key component in our challenge to develop a skilled workforce. Jim brings considerable talent and expertise to the position and will continue the success in meeting BAT's goals."Van Erden has a master's degree in statistics from Utah State University and a Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Utah. He taught at Weber State before moving to Washington, D.C., 13 years ago.

In his new role, Van Erden will have a staff of 250 people and a budget of $14 million.
