Fire swept through an apartment building for senior citizens, killing five and injuring at least 15 as panicked residents jumped from windows in desperate flight from the smoke and flames.

Fire officials said the four-story Majestic Manor had no fire escape or sprinkler system. Glass littered the lawn and sidewalks below shattered windows Friday morning as chilled and fatigued residents huddled in the lobby.Police said a 50-year-old man taken into custody for investigation of arson was later released.

A spokesman said late Friday nothing was being ruled out in the police investigation, but Fire Chief Harold Watkin called the fire simply a tragic accident that apparently started in a garbage can on the first floor.

Thursday night's three-alarm fire started in the west wing, and fire and thick smoke quickly swept up the stairwells, choking hallways and preventing many from fleeing their apartments, investigators said.
