The U.S. Ski Team released John McMurtry as alpine program director Friday, according to team CEO Howard Peterson. McMurtry had headed the program since 1988.

Ironically, it was McMurtry who fired Georg Capaul, head men's slalom and gian slalom coach, a week ago.McMurtry has been offered another position with the team - heading the sports medicine and sports science program. McMurtry who has a masters degree in sports science, has not accepted the position.

Peterson will act as interim alpine director.
