A bill to better protect two segments of the Colorado River in Utah continued a smooth flow through Congress Wednesday.

The House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee endorsed a bill to designate Westwater and Cataract canyons as part of the national wild and scenic river system. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, has already passed the Senate and goes next to the full House, where a vote is expected next week.

The designation essentially protects beaches of the area as wilderness areas, preventing development and roads.
