A Salt Lake man serving a life term in prison for armed robbery had another five-years-to-life term added this week in 2nd District Court.
Ernest D. Marquez, 24, a suspect in up to 20 Salt Lake robberies and two in Bountiful, pleaded guilty in 2nd District Court to the May 2 holdup of a Bountiful gas station.Marquez pleaded guilty to one of two aggravated robbery charges filed against him. In return for the guilty plea, the second charge was dropped and a five-year enhancement for use of a firearm was not requested by the Davis County Attorney.
Marquez never had been in trouble before and had no criminal record, defense attorney Steve Vanderlinden told Judge Rodney S. Page. But he became hooked on heroin and began robbing gas stations and stores to support his habit.
Page ordered the five-to-life sentence to run concurrently with the term Marquez is serving now.
