Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Co Thach will go to Washington to meet the American general in charge of the search for U.S. soldiers missing after the Vietnam War, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Thursday.
Thach will meet with the officer, Gen. John Vessey, at the invitation of the United States, the spokeswoman told reporters. No date for the trip has been set.Thach was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and met Secretary of State James Baker Sept. 29 in the highest bilateral meeting since the war ended in 1975.
Vessey visited Hanoi in August 1987 as an envoy of then-President Reagan. He handed over to the government a list of the names of 70 American soldiers missing in action that it wanted Hanoi to account for.
The two sides have carried out 11 joint investigations in more than 30 provinces, digging up graves and interviewing villagers in search of U.S. servicemen.
