While the Rich-Duchesne game - a non-league 1A contest at that - may be the sole prep football game pitting ranked opponents this week, there is footballplenty on line anyway in nearly all of the state's 42 contests this week.

Even though October is less than a week old, most teams are three weeks (read: three weekly games) away from starting the prep playoffs. The 4A, 3A and 1A teams conclude the regular season on Oct. 18. Meanwhile, the 2A teams finish up a week early on Oct. 10, with just two games remaining before the postseason starts.A couple of notes - Regions 1 and 5 play Thursday, while the rest of the games are slated for Fridays, with starting times listed for each game in the Scoreboard section on page D4. And region records, not overall marks, are listed with the teams in the region-by-region review below.

Region 1 (4 4A berths): Perhaps the top league matchup has Clearfield (2-1) visiting region leader and third-ranked Davis (3-0), with the Darts carrying the only unbeaten region record right now. Fourth-ranked Roy (3-1) hosts Viewmont (1-2), while Layton (0-4) looks for its first league win by facing Bonneville (1-2), which has dropped its last two straight region games. Weber (2-2) hosts Region 2's Olympus in a non-region contest.

Region 2 (4 4A berths): Some luster is missing as Alta (2-2) visits second-ranked Highland (2-1), since the former No. 2 Hawks were drubbed 49-9 by top-ranked Skyline last week. Meanwhile, No. 1 Skyline (3-0) travels to East (0-3), which has lost four straight. And Brighton (2-1) hosts Cottonwood (1-3) - the Bengals have averaged only 12 points a game this year, while the Colts have given up 152 points in just the past three games. And Olympus (2-2) heads north to take on Weber of Region 1 in a non-league game.

Region 3 (5 4A berths): The spotlight here follows fifth-ranked Cyprus (4-0) as the Pirates travel to Taylorsville (3-1) - Cyprus has won four straight, while Taylorsville has allowed an average of less than 10 points a game. West Jordan (4-0), the other league leader, hosts Bingham (1-3) - the Jaguars have scored plenty but haven't enjoyed a winning margin of more than eights points this season, while Bingham scored 30 points in its sole win against Hunter and a total of 20 points in the Miners' five other games. Elsewhere, Hunter (0-4) travels to Granger (3-1) and Kearns (0-4) visits Hillcrest (1-3).

Region 4 (3 4A berths): It's too early for a front-runner to have emerged. Orem (2-1) visits American Fork (1-2), Provo (2-1) plays at Pleasant Grove (2-1), and Mountain View (1-2) travels to Timpview (1-2). Pleasant Grove has won two straight, while Mountain View has dropped two straight.

Region 5 (5 3A berths): Bear River (3-0) takes its five-game win streak on the road to two-time titlist Logan (1-2), which won last week after starting league play with back-to-back losses. In other games, Ben Lomond (2- 2) travels to Sky View (1-2) and Ogden (0-4) plays at fifth-ranked Mountain Crest (3-0). Box Elder (2-2) is idle.

Region 6 (6 3A berths): After beating Jordan last week and returning to the No. 1 ranking in the 3A poll, Bountiful (4-0) its sole possession of the league lead to Tooele (2-2), which has lost two straight. Third-ranked Jordan (3-1) hosts Woods Cross (3-1), with the Wildcats' two losses coming to 4A ranked Davis and league peer West - the latter by a single point. Judge (0- 4), which has scored only 27 points in six overall games this season, travels to West (2-1), and Granite (0-4) visits Murray (1-3).

Region 7 (3 3A berths): After starting the preseason with three straight losses, Lehi (3-0) is looking for its fourth consecutive region victory against Union (0-3), which has lost four straight. The toughest contest might be as neighboring rivals Carbon (2-1) and Emery County (2-1) meet in Price. And Wasatch (1-2) travels to Uintah (1-2), with both teams needing a win to keep postseason hopes alive.

Region 8 (4 3A berths): In its first game after being bumped out of the top poll spot by Bountiful, second-ranked Springville (3-0) takes to the road to meet Cedar City (1-2). Fourth-ranked Dixie (2-1) follows its loss to Springville last week by meeting high-scoring Pine View (2-1), while Spanish Fork looks (1-2) for its second straight victory by visiting winless Payson (0-3).

Region 9 (6 2A berths): Second-ranked North Sanpete (4-0) takes its unbeaten overall and region records down the backstretch as the Hawks visit Manti (2-3), with the Templars playing their final league game. Third-ranked Park City (3-1) visits Grantsville (3-1), with the winner taking over second place in the standings behind North Sanpete. South Summit (2-2) hosts Morgan (2-2), Juab (0-5) meets 1A Parowan in a non-region game, and independent Grand County (3-2 equivalent league record) plays the Grand Junction, Colo., junior varsity in a contest that doesn't count against its qualifying record.

Region 10 (6 2A berths): Top-ranked Hurricane (5-0) holds sole possession of first in the league standings, with the Tigers hosting Richfield (2-3). Beaver (4-1) and Millard (3-2), which tied for fourth in the recent 2A poll, host South Sevier (0-5) and Kanab (3-2), respectively. North Sevier (1- 4) travels to Delta (2-3), while independent San Juan (3-2 equivalent league record) plays Farmington, N.M., in a non-counting game.

Region 11 (2 1A berths): The three-team league finally starts region play, as Dugway meets top-ranked North Summit, with the Braves undefeated against 1A competition and winless against a trio of 2A teams this year.

Still a week away from playing its first region game, fourth-ranked Rich puts its four-game win streak on the line against second-ranked Duchesne in a non- league game.

Region 12 (2 1A berths): Although Milford (1-0) won the first two games against league foe Parowan (0-1), both will be playoff bound. Third- ranked Milford meets the Pine View JV in a Thursday game, while fifth-ranked Parowan plays 2A Juab.

Region 13 (4 1A berths): A couple of league games are on tap for Friday, as Monticello (2-0) hosts East Carbon (0-1) and Altamont (0-1) travels to Whitehorse (0-2). In a non-legaue game, second-ranked Duchesne (2-0) hosts Rich.
