President Ezra Taft Benson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remained in serious condition early Wednesday morning at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The 91-year-old church leader remained in the hospital's intensive care unit. He was taken back to intensive care Sunday morning after gastrointestinal bleeding was detected.Tuesday afternoon doctors were continuing to give treatment for the bleeding. President Benson has received several units of blood since Sunday, said Don LeFevre, a church spokesman.

Earlier, LeFevre quoted doctors saying the bleeding was not related to blood clots on each side of President Benson's brain for which he underwent surgery Sept. 19 and Sept. 23. President Benson was admitted to the hospital Sept. 18.

In June he spent several days in the hospital for a bacterial infection.
