Dynamite and chemicals in a cocaine manufacturing laboratory exploded Tuesday in the city of Medellin, killing at least eight people, including five children, officials said.

The laboratory located in a house exploded about 9:45 a.m., said Rodrigo Palacios, assistant secretary of the city of Medellin, 160 miles northwest of Bogota.Six people died at the scene and two others in hospitals, Palacios said. Also, 57 people were wounded, 12 of them seriously, said a spokesman for the city. Six houses were destroyed and five others seriously damaged, along with 18 vehicles.
