Hundreds of people, including political and sports leaders, attended the funeral of Larry O'Brien, who served as NBA commissioner after a career at the highest level of American politics.

One of the Democratic party's leading strategists for two decades, O'Brien,who engineered passage of such wide-ranging social legislation as the Peace Corps, Medicare and the model cities program, died Thursday of cancer in New York. He was 73.O'Brien served as NBA commissioner from to 1975 to 1983.
