Stop. Wait a minute, Mr. Postman. The House sent a message Monday that may soon change the name of the post office in Orem.
By voice vote, it passed a bill by Rep. Howard Nielson, R-Utah, to rename the Orem post office in honor of former Sen. Arthur V. Watkins, R-Utah, who served from 1947 to 1959, and was from the Orem area.Nielson told the House, "I realize passing legislation of this nature is rather routine. However, the contributions and service rendered this country by Sen. Watkins were anything but routine."
He said Watkins served with dignity and distinction and confounded cynics with the firmness of his convictions and the balance of his judgment.
"Perhaps his most memorable role was that of chairman of the Select Committee on the Censure of Joseph McCarthy. At the time, many questioned the wisdom of naming Watkins chairman but were soon surprised by the control and forcefulness he demonstrated," Nielson said.
The bill now goes to the Senate. Nielson is also pushing another bill to honor another former House member from Utah, Rep. J. Will Robinson, D-Utah. Nielson himself will become a former member himself at the end of the year because he is retiring.
