A Bountiful man was severely injured Sunday evening when a pipe bomb he had made and taken on a fishing trip blew up in his hands, Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies reported.
According to a deputy's report, the 28-year-old victim went fishing Sunday with two friends in the Mill Hollow area near Kamas. One of the friends told deputies that the victim had built "a couple" of bombs out of 1-inch galvanized pipe and gunpowder at home and brought them with him on the fishing trip. The friend told deputies that the three men were fishing separately when the bomb went off and the victim screamed for help.
After loading the injured man into a car, his companions started for a Salt Lake hospital. En route, they flagged down Capt. Mike Wilkinson, who called for a helicopter, the report states.
The victim was taken to LDS Hospital for treatment, and was listed in satisfactory condition Monday night.
