Southern Utah's Lawrence Gilbert recovered a Santa Clara fumbled kick-off return and ran it back for 17 yards at the end of the first half to spark a 24-20 win over the Broncos in Western Football Conference action Saturday night.
"Lawrence came up with the big play just before the half and that was what we needed," SU Head Football Coach Jack Bishop said. "I thought we totally controlled the game in the second half."The Thunderbird defense held the WFC's most potent offense to just six points in the game's final 39 minutes to preserve the win in the conference opener for both teams.
Southern Utah Strong safety Tim Nicolodemos notched two interceptions and recorded 10 tackles (seven unassisted) to lead the defense.
