The Utah State University Institutional Council approved the appointment Saturday of Brian L. Pitcher to fill the newly created position of associate provost.

USU Provost Karen Morse said Pitcher will work in international activities and university assessment, and also will continue his departmental role in teaching and research as professor of sociology. In recent years, Morse said, her office has had to assume additional responsibilities, particularly in State Board of Regents program reviews, international education curricula, and exchanges and assessment of education programs and outcomes.

The Institutional Council also approved the appointment of Morris Whitaker as director of international educational programs, succeeding James Thomas, who has been named director of the USU Far East Regional Office in New Delhi, India.

Whitaker has just completed a three-year assignment in Ecuador as an advisor in international programs.
