A Heber City man died Friday night after he apparently wandered away from his wrecked vehicle and fell off a cliff in Hobble Creek Canyon.

The Utah County Sheriff's Department said Thomas R. Schofield, 40, was driving down Hobble Creek Canyon Road around 10:30 p.m. when he apparently lost control of his car on a curve approximately 1.7 miles above the main fork. He skidded off the road and hit a tree.Schofield then wandered away from his car, apparently not realizing he was near the edge of a cliff. He fell approximately 25 feet, landing in a creek at the base of the cliff, according to the dispatcher.

The sheriff's department received a call about the car off the road around midnight. Deputy sheriffs found Schofield's body in the creek. Members of the Utah County Search and Rescue Team recovered the body from the water.
