Southern Utah opens its Western Football Conference season tonight against Santa Clara at 7 p.m. in Buck Shaw Stadium.

The T-Birds take a 2-2 record into the contest with the Broncos, who are 3-1. The T-Birds are 1-3 lifetime against the Broncos."Santa Clara is a real sound football team which generally doesn't beat itself," said SU Coach Jack Bishop. "We always play them tough, but have had a bit of a hard time beating them."

The Broncos lead the conference in several categories, including total offense and passing offense. Aaron Wise leads the league in rushing with a 125-yard average. Quarterback Craig Bergman leads the WFC in passing. Geoff Cook leads the league in receiving.

The Thunderbirds are led by quarterback Brad Matthews, who has come back from a rib injury to be the No. 2 quarterback in the league. Former quarterback Steve Hutchings is the team's top rusher with a 63-yard average.

After Saturday's game, Southern Utah has three straight home games.
