A southern Utah dentist accused of treating non-dental conditions and injecting drugs for recreation has had his professional licenses restricted by state regulators.

An order issued by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing said Dr. John Schmutz, Kanab, obtained painkillers for a female employee suffering menstrual cramps. He later self-injected Demerol along with the same employee until he fired her and sought treatment for his drug addiction, the order said.Regulators have placed Schmutz' license to practice and prescribe medication on five years probation. Schmutz' license to prescribe "schedule II" drugs was suspended for two years.
