Jeffrey Snow Montague, a university instructor, writer and community volunteer, died Sept. 23 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Mr. Montague taught literature and composition at the University of Utah and University of California, Berkeley. He wrote for print media, television and non-commercial radio and was a doctoral candidate in the American political novel at Berkeley.Mr. Montague was a longtime volunteer at KRCL Radio, a local non-profit radio station. He worked as a community organizer, fund-raiser and advocate for the poor. From 1981 through 1983, he taught literature at the Institute of International Relations in Beijing, China.

Friends are invited to share in remembering and meditation with the family on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the White Community Memorial Chapel, 150 E. Third North. A private gathering is being planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations of money or time to the Salt Lake Community Shelter, ACLU, the Nature Conservancy, KRCL Radio or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
