Detectives are continuing to look for eight people who stole more than $55,000 from a ZCMI store safe during an elaborate burglary scheme earlier this week.

Five women and three men entered ZCMI in the South Towne Mall, 10450 S. State, about 3:15 p.m. Monday. Two clerks were working in the business office area when several of the suspects tried to divert the clerks' attention."These people just swamped them with work to do . . . and kept these people real busy," said Sandy Police Sgt. C.M. Watson.

In the meantime, the other suspects made their way back to the store's safe. The burglars even pried off doors to get back to the area where the safe was and then pried open the door to the metal safe. The safe was apparently shut but not locked.

"They were slick and quick," Watson said. "It was very well planned."

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
