Wyoming heads on the road this weekend for a Western Athletic Conference clash against Utah without two key players who were felled by injuries in the Cowboys' 24-12 victory over Air Force.
The Cowboys, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the WAC, will be without the services of punt returner Tim Mara and those of guard Jim Scifres.Mara will probably miss at least three weeks recovering from a possible concussion, Coach Paul Roach said Tuesday.
A 5-foot-11 sophomore treasured by Roach for his sure hands, Mara collapsed along the sideline Saturday after absorbing a vicious hit in the Air Force game.
"I don't think it's a serious thing, which makes us all very happy," said Roach. "When a guy collapses like that after being hit, you really worry about a spinal difficulty or a paralysis kind of thing. So we're most pleased."
Mara underwent some medical tests earlier this week, and more were scheduled, Roach said.
"Hopefully there won't be anything additional crop up on those scans," he said.
Scifres will miss this weekend because of a knee sprain he sustained against Air Force, although Roach said the guard may be back in time for Wyoming's Oct. 6 game with San Diego State. Running back Jay Daffer injured a knee against Air Force and is questionable for the Utah game, said Roach.
