Orem Realtor Gary R. Herbert was named "Realtor of the Year" by the Utah Association of Realtors at the trade group's annual convention held in Scottsdale, Ariz.

St. George Realtor Claudia E. Ashby was elected president of the 3,700-member association. Salt Lake Realtor Richard L. Wood was named president-elect; Richard C. Bennion was named vice president and Jeff Mendenhall will serve as secretary-treasurer.The four officers will comprise the UAR's executive committee, charged with steering the organization's 40-member board of directors and overseeing all association activities.

Some 500 Utah Realtors gathered for the convention, which concluded Saturday night, said Al Mansell, outgoing UAR president.

Herbert is owner-broker of Herbert & Associates Inc., a real estate company launched in 1980. He began his career with Boley Realty in 1969 and continued with the firm until 1979.

Herbert was president of the UAR in 1989 and has held several teaching positions in his career, including partner-operator of the Cascade School of Real Estate from 1978-81, instructor of real estate for seven years at Utah Technical College at Orem/Provo, state pre-licensing instructor and instructor for the UAR's Graduate Realtors Institute program.

He was named Realtor of the Year by the Utah County Board of Realtors in 1985.

Ashby, a native of Murray, is a real estate agent with Bloomington Realty, St. George. Since 1978, she has held nine appointed and six elected positions with the Washington County Board of Realtors, most recently two terms as president from 1986-88.

She has been a director of the UAR since 1986. She has served on the UAR's Strategic Planning Committee and is a trustee of the Utah Realtors' Political Action Committee. In 1988 she was named the UAR's Women's Council of Realtors "Woman of the Year."
