David B. Magleby, a professor of political science at Brigham Young University, has been named the 1990 Utah Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation.

Professors of the year were named in 44 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, in addition to the national winner, JW Carmichael Jr., a professor of chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana, according to Virginia Carter Smith, interim president of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.The council chose the winners from 537 professors nominated by colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, she said.

The Salt Lake native has gained recognition for directly involving students in exit polling, the election process, broadcasting of election results and political analysis.
