Southern Utah quarterback Brad Matthews threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns despite missing part of the second half to lead the Thunderbirds to a 31-27 win over NAIA foe Mesa State College.

Southern Utah's win breaks a 30-game winning streak at home dating back to 1984 for the Mavericks. The defense, led by John Alcorn's 14 tackles, one sack and one interception, bent under a strong Mesa rushing attack (295 total rushing yards by Mesa) but did not break when it counted. Four consecutive stops on the SU eight-yard line sealed the win for the T-Birds.
