The Contemporary Luthier Exhibit at the Art Barn (54 Finch Lane) Aug. 5 will begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature the Oquirrh Ridge Drifters.
Luthier derives from a French word ("luitaio"), which means lute-maker - fitting for these acoustic musicians who have been playing stringed instruments as a group for seven years. The Oquirrh Ridge Drifters are comprised of Tom Stetich, mandolin player; Ron Mileur, guitar; Rex Flinner, banjo; and Kennard Machol, fiddle and bass player. Opening for musicians like Doc Watson, the Drifters have brought traditional bluegrass music to the Moun-tain West."Instruments of Expression: The Contemporary Luthier" will run through Aug. 19 highlighting local stringed instrument makers and players. Salt Lake City is widely recognized for the excellence and craftsmanship of the Peter Prier Violin Making School.
