A fire sputtered through a downtown Salt Lake office building Saturday, destroying a wall and a door.
Firefighters responded to a call of heavy smoke at the Clift Building, 10 W. 300 South, about 5 p.m. Officials said the blaze apparently started in a storage room in the basement of the building. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
"When we got here, we could see heavy smoke pouring through the ventilation grate in front of the building," Battalion Chief Rein Kauff-mann said.
Eight Salt Lake City fire units, including a ladder truck, responded to the blaze. It took firefighters about five minutes to douse the fire.
Kauffmann said damage in the basement was $1,000 to $1,500 and smoke damage on the third and fourth floors may be heavy. No injuries were reported.
