A man who was severely burned when flames swept through two apartments remained in critical condition late Saturday at the University of Utah Medical Center's burn unit.
Ray Gibbs Pledger, 39, was seriously burned in a fire at a duplex at 569 S. 800 East on Friday that destroyed one of the apartments. The Salt Lake man was found unconscious inside a center room of the duplex. "We dragged him out but he was badly burned," a firefighter said at the scene. "He had been in there for some time. It was great to see he was still alive - he's very lucky."
The fire, which destroyed the south side of the duplex, spread through four different rooms in the apartment before the Salt Lake Fire Department received a call.
"We got the call at about 10:55 p.m.," Battalion Chief Don Hill said. "We were able to contain the fire in about 10 minutes, but we had three engines and more than 18 men down here fighting the blaze."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
