Combined Deseret News, AP LDS Church President Ezra Taft Benson's medical condition was upgraded to fair Saturday, but the 91-year-old leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remains in the intensive care unit of LDS Hospital.

Church spokesman Don LeFevre said earlier that President Benson would remain in the Intensive Care Unit until Sunday and in the hospital for another week.President Benson underwent surgery Wednesday to remove blood clots on his brain. He suffered severe headaches and difficulty swallowing before being hospitalized Tuesday.

Church spokesman Don LeFevre did not know whether those symptoms had been alleviated by the surgery.

Benson remained on pain-killing medication, but has been conscious and responsive, able to converse with visitors, LeFevre said.
