Twelve cities won $400 prizes recently at a Utah Community Progress banquet in Salt Lake City.
State awards were presented to Tremonton, Box Elder County; Midvale; Mt. Pleasant, Sanpete County; Cedar City; Beaver; and Hyrum, Cache County.First-place Progress Awards went to Gunnison, Sanpete County; Ephraim; Garland, Box Elder County; Springville; Murray and Escalante, Garfield County.
In all, 34 Utah communities were honored at the program, which was sponsored by the Utah League of Cities and Towns, the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development and the Utah State University Cooperative Extension Service.
The program, which encourages citizen volunteers to help in community self-improvement, is in its 18th year.
Tremonton was honored for its efforts to improve its planning program, including a water study, helping to organize the Bear River Water Conservancy District, updating its master plan and organizing a downtown revitalization plan.
Midvale was honored for achievements in human relations and cultural enrichment, including efforts to clean up two major tailing areas, volunteers who helped clean up city property and a strong senior citizen's program.
Mt. Pleasant's use of historic buildings in developing its downtown and efforts to market itself as a hub city earned it top honors.
Cedar City was recognized for a target industry study it conducted and used for industrial recruiting. The city has seen the creation of 600 to 800 new jobs over the past two years.
Beaver was honored for its physical environment. Judges said they were impressed with Beaver's Christmas light project, which involved new wiring, a lighted night parade and new lights. The city was also honored for its Main Street park and library and remodeled Civic Opera House.
Hyrum won a top prize for community service. The Cache Valley community was recognized for hiring an architect to develop its main streets. New sidewalks were also installed in front of two blocks of businesses.
Five communities receiving second-place Progress Awards were Wellsville and River Heights, in Cache County; Pleasant Grove; Price; and Leeds, Washington County.
Third place recipients were Alta; Aurora, Sevier County; Brigham City; Elk Ridge and Mapleton, in Utah County; Enterprise, Washington County; Midway, Wasatch County; Milford, Beaver County; Moab; Monticello; Panguitch; Provo; Roy; Sandy; Spanish Fork; South Salt Lake; and Wellington, Carbon County.
