Six West Valley City firefighters received departmental awards during a banquet held in their honor Friday evening.

The Medal of Valor, the department's top honor, was given to firefighter Brett Larkin, who rescued his captain, Regan Perez, from inside a burning mobile home April 14. Perez probably would have received serious burns or been killed if Larkin hadn't rescued him, said W. John Williams, deputy fire chief.

Firefighter Michael Montgomery received the Distinguished Service Award. He was nominated for his work with the juvenile fire setter counseling program and for his work on the stress-debriefing team.

Battalion Chief Jeff Scharman received the Officer of the Year award; Joseph White received the Engineer of the Year award; and Bob Fitzgerald received the Firefighter of the Year award for his work in public safety and fire education in the city's elementary schools, Williams said.

Assistant Chief Darrell McIlrath was given a special presentation for his service to the department as fire chief between 1982 and 1986.
