Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, will hand out $3,000 in scholarships Saturday from his congressional salary to six low-income students, Owens staffers said Friday.
The $500 one-time scholarships will be awarded during a cermony at the University of Utah Hinckley Institute of Politics. The Utah Democrat has awarded the scholarships every two years for the past six years."The recipients also are receiving some federal aid and are the first in their families to go to college," Owens staffers said.
The 1990 winners are: Patiola T. Alusa of Kearns and Tuong N. Hoang of Salt Lake City, who both are enrolling in the University of Utah Upward Bound Program; U. students Joyce Ann Erickson of Salt Lake and Beth Heselton of West Valley City; and Salt Lake Community College students Sambath U. Chao and Shauna Kay Heil, both of West Valley.
The recipients were selected based on their academic potential and financial need. The money comes from the congressional cost-of-living increase Owens received this year.
