With temperatures averaging 75.7 degrees - 2.5 degrees above the 30-year average - the summer of 1990 was the fifth warmest on record.

The warmest summer (June, July and August) was in 1988, when the average temperature was 77.7 degrees, said William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the Salt Lake office of the National Weather Service. Two records were set during August. A record-high maximum temperature of 102 degrees was set Aug. 8 at the Salt Lake International Airport. Previously, the record was 100 degrees in 1936. On Aug. 9, a record-high minimum of 73 was set. Previously, it was 71 in 1932.

Twelve times this summer the temperature climbed to 100 degrees or higher at the Salt Lake International Airport. This ties with 1979 for the fourth greatest number of days of 100 degrees or higher. The greatest number of such days in any summer was 21 in 1960, Alder said.

The average monthly high temperature at the airport was 90.0 degrees, with 62.3 degrees being the average monthly low. The latter was 2.6 degrees above normal.

On Aug. 8 the mercury climbed to 103 degrees, the warmest temperature recorded at the airport during the month. The coolest reading was 52 degrees on Aug. 23.

The warmest temperature ever recorded at the airport in August was 104 degrees on the 4th in 1979.

As most water watchers will agree, August was a mostly dry month. Only 0.46 of an inch of precipitation fell during the month. That is 50 percent of the normal amount, 0.92 inches. Maximum precipitation over 24 hours was 0.23 inches on Aug. 16-17, Alder said.

"The water year (which began October 1989) now stands at a pathetic 10.32 inches, or 72 percent of normal. The normal amount is 14.42 inches," Alder said.

A total of 10.50 inches of water was measured during the 1988-89 water year, with 9.87 inches in 1987-1988; 10.66 inches in 1986-1987; and a whopping 20.65 inches in 1985-1986.
