Syndicated columnist Jack Anderson was hit on the head with a pipe and robbed of about $100 by a mugger in a alley just moments after he left his office in Washington, D.C., a spokeswoman said Friday.
Spokeswoman Opal Ginn said Anderson, 67, left his office about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and headed down the alley to get to his car when a man in his 20s approached him, said "Good Afternoon Sir," then hit him on the back of the head. The man then demanded all his money."Jack gave him about $100 from his pocket and said the man raised the pipe as if to strike him again when a woman began to scream," Ginn said.
Anderson returned to his office after the attack, and Ginn phoned police.
"I dialed 911, and the police put me on hold. I held for approximately five minutes, then I'd say it took about 15 minutes before the police arrived. By that time the man could've walked across the river," Ginn said.
Ginn said Anderson refused hospital treatment, and his son drove him home.
Anderson's column appears in the Deseret News.
