Notre Dame used a 28-24 win over No. 9 Michigan to strengthen its hold on the No. 1 spot in the Scripps Howard weekly poll. The Irish received 21 first-place votes and 693 of a possible 720 poll points from a panel of 36 football writers.

The top three spots remained unchanged. Florida State and Auburn follow the Irish with 660 and 592 points, respectively. FSU garnered seven first-place votes, while the Tigers netted one top billing.Brigham Young used four first-place votes to improve to No. 4, replacing Michigan. Southern Cal rounds out the top five after handing Penn State its second-straight loss.

Newcomers this week to the Top 20 are Arizona and Florida. Dropping out of sight were Pittsburgh and Clemson.
